Château Lamothe
Château Lamothe can trace its existence back to the 16th century. Renovated in the 19th century, it has developed into a charming dwelling, the facade of which is reproduced on the label of the wine bottles.
Located in the town of Haux, at the top of a clay-limestone hillside in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, this estate, which was originally devoted to growing vines, has belonged to the Neel family since 1956, encompassing the last four generations who have inhabited and maintained the property.
Currently the 80 hectare vineyard, also including the vines of Château Manos since 1991, is managed by Anne Neel and her children, Maria and Damien Chombart.
Over time, these Lamothe enthusiasts have enlarged the vineyard, converted impressive underground galleries into cellars and have given their wines a super reputation.
The cellars have been constructed from stone quarries which were mined to build the Château and surrounding properties which were excavated in the 17th Century. The limestone deposits were formed by the sea which covered the Aquitaine basin around 35 million years ago and have even revealed Mammoth fossils.
A first gallery in an almost religious atmosphere houses 300 barrels in which the red wine is perfected for 12 to 18 months.
In another, larger cavern, the bottles are kept for a slow and gentle maturation in the ideal conditions generated.
SUSTAINABLE VITICULTURE
“At Château Lamothe de Haux, we are committed to producing our wines in a logic of sustainable viticulture.” Damien Chombart
In order to respect and preserve the environment, the Château promotes biodiversity in their vines and practice respectful viticulture every day, from the plots to the cellar.
As such, HVE certification has been acheived. (High Environmental Value). This from the production of the 2018 vintage. This certification on the farm is the result of several years efforts to progress towards sustainable agriculture, respectful of the environment in harmony with the nature that surrounds us.
