Bodegas Piqueras
Stainton Wines import directly from this dynamic, family owned winery and, at the last count, we had seven different wines under three different labels, all of which are organic, bar the sparkling wine we offer.
A fourth generation winery, founded in 1915 by Luis Piqueras Lopez, Bodegas Piqueras is located in Almansa, in the south-east of Spain, 60 km from Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea.
The vineyards are located in the D.O. Almansa, characterised by soil that is low in fertility and receives little rain which, together with a semi-arid continental climate, enables them to obtain wines that are deep in colour and offer great aromatic richness.
The traditional range is labeled under the ‘Piqueras’ name and include a red, Old Vine Garnacha (Grenache), and a white, Wild Fermented Verdejo.
The grapes for Old Vine Garnacha come from vineyards, that are at 750-900 metres altitude. These are 45-60 year old, dry-farmed goblet vines which have been planted in cool, sandy plots to obtain a wine with sweeter tannins while preserving the fruit on the palate.
Organic farming methods, soils poor in nutrients and rich in limestone, low rainfall and careful selection ensure that the outcome is wine of exceptional value.
The white Piqueras, Wild Fermented Verdejo, is a revelation; a barrel fermented beauty using the indigenous Verdejo grape and the oak contact gives a bright and golden colour, complex and intense nose of exotic fruit, minerals and a subtle touch of wood.
Unctuous and elegant on the palate with very good natural acidity. Balanced and persistent finish.
In a nod to the founder, Luis, there is a range called “El Abuelo” or Grandfather. We stock three wines in this range, including a fresh and vibrant blend of Verdejo with Sauvignon Blanc, a mid-weight fruity red, which is a Tempranillo and Syrah blend, and a high quality sparkling wine which we consider to be a much tastier alternative to the ubiquitous Prosecco.
At Stainton Wines, you’ll also find two wines under the modern and attractive “El Picoteo” label.
A full and rich Monastrell (Mourvedre) and Syrah blend which enjoys 3-months in American and French oak adding a layer of character and fullness, and a very impressive dry rosé from Syrah.
We recommend most heartily and with full confidence, all the wines from Bodegas Piqueras.
