Riesling, Schoelhammer
France
£129.50
An expensive price tag, but certainly a rare gem of a wine.
Organic Riesling “Schoelhammer” is Famille Hugel’s greatest expression (dry) of the Riesling grape. It is a tiny patch of earth atop a hill, and this very special Schoelhammer organic vineyard covers a mere 6,300 square metres (67,800 square feet), 30 rows of vines dedicated to Riesling and organically farmed.
The prized Triassic Keuper marl soil from the secondary era (marine sediments, c.200 million years) are the all important secret weapon in producing such stunning wine.
It magnificently showcases how great this grape can be, the best way to enjoy it is probably on its own, with fellow Riesling enthusiasts, or if with food, something simple and plain to allow the wine centre stage.
