Established in Kendal in 1984, with an ambition to source and import some of the most characterful wines from small, interesting growers around the globe, Stainton Wines has grown to become a friendly and approachable independent wine merchants, and trusted trade wholesale partner to hospitality businesses across the North West and the Lake District.

Talaos, Abbe Rous
Cote Vermeille
Talaos, named after one of Jason’s Argonauts (for reasons we cannot fathom) is a full bodied, hearty red from Abbe Rous. The IGP Cote Vermeille is in the Banyuls area of Southern France, but is distinguished by the fact that this wine is not fortified. Overlooking the sea near the Pyrenees, the vineyards yield a clean, pure Grenache. Un-oaked, it is opulent and full with an elegant and generous richness.
Riesling, Vom Gelben Löss
Josef Ehmoser, Austria
Riesling is another huge success story, alongside the native Grüner Veltliner grape, in Austria, and the soils in the Ehmoser vineyards suit its requirements perfectly.
A balanced, complex aromatic intensity and stone fruit accents are the notable attributes. In addition to its juicy acidity, it shines with a taut, precise fruit.
Cuvée Premium Rosé Cru Classe
Côtes de Provence, France
This is a beautifully fresh and balanced rosé. The clementine fruit is crunchy on the nose with intense freshness and great aromatic elegance in the blend of Grenache and Syrah.
Delightfully full flavoured with a distinctly dry finish.
Prosecco Superiore di Conegliano Valdobbiadene
Frassinelli, Veneto, Italy
The Glera grape variety is used for this delightful Prosecco. Before Prosecco became universally adopted, Glera was the traditional name for this type of sparkling wine.
Prosecco Superiore di Conegliano Valdobbiadene has a good body with flowery ripeness and a smooth, fulsome character. Clean and rounded on the palate, with a generous aftertaste.
Ramos Pinto 10 Year Old Tawny Port – Quinta de Ervamoira
Douro, Portugal
Well rounded and generous, it offers hints of orange, quince and plum, smooth and full bodied but wiith a nice fresh edge too.
Enjoy with fresh figs stuffed with almonds (a local speciality), or with desserts based around orange conserve, eggs or dried fruit for a delicious treat.

Our Story
The young, fresh-faced Frank Stainton had ambitions to be an English teacher but, after a summer helping out at a local wine merchants in Kendal, he inevitably fell under the spell of the grape and the rest, as they say, is history.
